Walking the

Good Old Ways

of Britain

Will Walking (William Parsons)

I’ve been making pilgrimage since 2004. I started at university, while writing about Chaucer. I wanted to find the truth of ‘pilgrimage’ beyond literature. Did it work in 20th Century Britain? Or was it just a Medieval dream?

What I found was a British tradition of ageless depth, hidden just below the surface. As soon as I spoke the P-word, unforeseen community magic awoke, with people of all kinds stepping forward to offer kindness and support. And they all seemed to wink as they expressed their gratitude at finding pilgrims once more on the path - especially pilgrims with songs…

Since then, I’ve taken the sacred British path of song to a thousand performances (with and without audiences) in hedgerow, hilltop, pub and church. I’ve gigged in the South Bank Centre, sung to Prince Charles (now King the III), and was even offered a record deal with Decca (I declined). I’ve rediscovered lost ancient pilgrimage routes, I created (and left) a national pilgrimage charity, and I’ve guided hundreds of people onto the pilgrimage footpath. My pilgrimage and song work has featured in most national newspapers, every BBC radio station, on BBC 1/2 and Channel 4 TV. I even got in Vogue. Along the way, I wrote a book and learned to wield a camera.

This is my website. May you find something useful here, and perhaps be inspired to make your own pilgrimage.

I hope to see you on the path. Bring a song. It is not getting dark.

Walk Well!
