The Path of Holy Thorns

Of all Glastonbury’s claims to sacred fame, one mystery quietly continues without debate or doubt, year after year.

This is the botanical miracle of Glastonbury’s Holy Thorn, a hawthorn tree that flowers not only in Spring, but also in the darkest days of Winter.

Legend says the first holy thorn was planted by Jospeh of Arimathea when visiting with his nephew Jesus.

Join a private guided a 4.5 mile (4 hour) pilgrimage to 17+ Holy Thorns around Glastonbury. Including access to the Abbey, The Tribunal House, and Chalice Well. Shorter-form pilgrimages are also available, for pilgrims with less time…

A Journey from Light to Dark

An Evening Pilgrimage to Stoney Littleton Long Barrow

This is a pilgrimage from the holy well of St Julian in Wellow to Stoney Littleton long barrow, a Neolithic (5500 year old ) burial chamber on a Somerset hilltop.

From Glastonbury, I shall transport your small private group (1-3 people) by car to the village of Wellow, whose hidden holy well is dedicated to St Julian, the patron of travellers. We’ll carry this water on a short pilgrimage to the famed Long Barrow, where we’ll cirumambulate the barrow, and offer holy water as our pilgrimage gift: for threshold clearing, as libation to ancestors, and for our own internal cleansing.

In the last of the day’s light, pilgrims can then enter the long barrow to make their own offerings of song, stillness and silence, or their own rituals in the deep dark, as I stand watch at the doorway.

Then we return to the village via Wellow brook, take a grounding refreshment in the village public house, and return to Glastonbury by car.
